Summer of Fun at the Framework Knitters Museum!

We’ve had a brilliant summer here at the Framework Knitters Museum, filled with hands-on heritage, creative expression, and plenty of family fun! From interactive activities to new storytelling experiences, there was something for everyone to enjoy over the school holidays.

The lawn outside our Workers Cottages came to life with games of quoits, where visitors of all ages could try their hand at this traditional pastime – a simple pleasure that brought lots of smiles and a bit of friendly competition too!

Also outside, Ann and Yvonne wowed visitors with their Victorian Laundry demonstrations, showing just how much hard work went into keeping clothes clean in days gone by. With washboards, dolly tubs and plenty of elbow grease, the demonstrations were both educational and great fun to watch.

Local artist Debsta led a series of free Community Art Sessions, inviting visitors to get creative in relaxed, drop-in workshops. From collage and drawing to collaborative art pieces, the Chapel Gallery became a welcoming space for artistic expression and connection.

Meanwhile, our dedicated staff and volunteers curated a high-quality exhibition that impressed visitors throughout the summer season. Featuring a mix of quilting, knitted, painting, embroidered and collage, the exhibition offered fresh insights into the hidden talents of the people who help to run the Museum.

We also introduced a brand new feature this year – Storytelling Sessions in the Summerhouse! Children and families gathered for engaging, themed stories that sparked imagination and tied in beautifully with the museum’s historic setting. A big thank you to everyone who joined us for these magical moments.

One of the highlights for younger visitors was the chance to dress up in Victorian clothing as they explored the museum – bringing history to life in the most memorable way. From flat caps and pinafores to shawls and bonnets, it was a joy to see children stepping into the shoes of the past.

To top it all off, our handling/ quiz table gave visitors the chance to test their knowledge and get hands-on with real objects from our collection – a fantastic way to learn through play and discovery.

We’d like to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who visited this summer, and to our amazing volunteers and team members who helped make it all happen. Your enthusiasm, creativity, and hard work brought the museum to life in so many wonderful ways.

Keep an eye on our website and social media for details of our upcoming autumn and winter events – including seasonal workshops, festive crafts, and more opportunities to step into history.
