School Trips to the Framework Knitters Museum

Looking for an engaging school trip in Nottinghamshire that brings the Industrial Revolution to life?

The Framework Knitters Museum offers immersive, curriculum-linked school workshops exploring Victorian industry, local history, working-class lives, textiles and the Luddite uprising. Set within an authentic 19th-century framework knitter’s cottage and workshop, our museum provides pupils with a powerful, hands-on learning experience.

Session Structure & Availability

School visits are typically booked as either a morning or afternoon session, with each session designed for one class of up to 30 pupils.

To provide schools with exclusive access and a focused learning environment, sessions take place on Tuesdays, when the museum is closed to the public.

Where a school has more than two classes wishing to visit, we are also able to offer an additional session on the Monday of the same week, subject to availability.

Industrial Revolution School Workshops

Our education programme supports Key Stage 1, Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 learning. As part of their visit, pupils have the opportunity to dress up in Victorian clothing, helping them step into the lives of framework knitters and their families during the Industrial Revolution.

Sessions have particular relevance to:

  • The Industrial Revolution

  • The Luddite movement

  • Victorian working conditions

  • Local Nottinghamshire history

  • Social and industrial change

  • Protest and reform in Britain

Pupils can see working knitting frames in action, explore original buildings, and discover how framework knitters lived and worked during a time of rapid industrial change.

Loan Boxes & Classroom Object Handling

To help schools prepare for their visit or, to enrich classroom learning, the Framework Knitters Museum offers physical loan objects and handling collections for schools to borrow.

These artefacts allow pupils to explore industrial and social history through real, tangible items connected to framework knitting and the Industrial Revolution. Object handling encourages curiosity, questioning and deeper historical understanding.

Loan materials can be used:

  • As preparation before a museum visit

  • To enhance an Industrial Revolution or Victorian history topic

  • To support learning about the Luddite movement

  • As engaging, hands-on classroom resources

To enquire about borrowing classroom objects or arranging a school visit, please contact the museum team.
