Operations Assistant/Volunteer Co-ordinator
The Framework Knitters Museum is a small independent museum based in the Nottinghamshire village of Ruddington. Recently listed by The Guardian newspaper as ‘one of the best small museums in the country’, our historic site has for nearly 200 years been the home of industrious and creative families working in often harsh conditions to produce beautiful textile products. To this day, creativity and community focus remain at the core of what we do.
The postholder will support the Operations Manager in the day-to-day operations of the Museum and Parkers Yard, which involves welcoming visitors and engaging them with the history of the site and exhibitions on display, supporting the promotion and delivery of events, and maintaining operational procedures of the museum, café, shop and chapel. The role requires acting as ‘duty manager’ when Operations Manager is not present, including opening and closing the site on those occasions.
The museum is heavily reliant on its team of around 50 volunteers to deliver its day-to-day operations, as well as special events and activities. The Volunteer Coordinator aspect of the role specifically organises the recruitment, training and supervision of our volunteer workforce.
Our museum has a strong educational remit, and we often host student placements and internships which can range from teenagers undertaking the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme to PhD level academics. An important part of the Volunteer Co-ordinator role will be to further develop and co-ordinate these activities working in co-operation with schools, colleges and universities.

My sister and I loved this museum. Especially the guided tours explaining how the machines work and the working and living conditions of the frame knitters at the time. Even got the chance to take a look at Queen Victoria’s stockings in the former methodist church across the cottages. Excellent museum! Very entertaining and interesting! Lovely to see such a local and ordinary history preserved
Excellent Museum!
Second visit to this fascinating museum, a veritable storehouse of social history, staffed by knowledgeable, enthusiastic folk. Some steps may prove difficult for the elderly or infirm but there’s plenty to appreciate at ground level.
